Tropical nights are hot.

Sheets stick to skin.

So we hug something instead.

Over time, it becomes second nature.

This is how
Indonesians sleep.

Since the 1800s

Not invented.
Inherited.

The guling is the long bolster in nearly every Indonesian bedroom — the one you've hugged since childhood. Before air-conditioning, it did quiet engineering: drape an arm and a leg over it and your limbs lift off the mattress, so air can move around your body through humid nights.

We kept that intelligence. Then we chose a better cover, a cleaner fill, and a length that actually fits an adult — and we numbered the first two hundred by hand.

Filled traditionally with kapok, a silky plant fibre. Named in Bahasa Indonesia — guling, "to roll." We credit the tradition; we don't rename it.

The TropiHug™ Guling

Something
to hold.

  • Full-body alignment. Shoulders open, spine neutral, hips square — a side-sleeper's whole night held in place.
  • Cool by design. The TENCEL™ Lyocell cover breathes and wicks; the shape lifts your limbs so air keeps moving.
  • Quiet company. The oldest comfort there is — engineered for how you actually fall asleep.

Stack vs. Hug

A pillow props your head.
A guling holds your body.

The Stack

Pillows lift the head and forget the rest. The spine twists, the top shoulder rolls, the hips collapse inward.

Most nights, most beds

The Hug

A full-length brace between your arms and knees. Shoulders open, spine runs straight, pelvis stays square. Calm follows.

First week, I slept through the night for the first time in months. My shoulders finally let go.

Amara S. · Side sleeper, London

I was sceptical about "breathable." It runs genuinely cool, even in Jakarta heat. No more flipping to the cold side.

Ical R. · Jakarta

Bought one, my partner immediately claimed it, so I bought a second. The linen cover softens every wash.

Grew up with a guling in Bandung; this is that feeling, made properly. The kapok smell of home, minus the lumps.

The honest answers.

Still unsure? Email hello@tropihug.com — a human replies within a day.

Isn't this just a big pillow?
No. A pillow supports your head; a guling braces your whole side — arms, spine, hips, knees. It's the difference between propping and holding. The 22 cm diameter and 150 cm length are measured for an adult to drape over, not to prop against.
Won't I overheat hugging it all night?
The opposite is the point. The TENCEL™ Lyocell cover wicks moisture and breathes, and the shape lifts your top arm and leg off the mattress so air keeps circulating — the original reason Indonesians have slept with a guling for two centuries.
Will it take over the bed? Can two people share?
It's a personal-space comfort — one guling per sleeper. At 22 cm it sits comfortably beside you on a double without crowding a partner. Couples who both love it tend to keep one each (we won't pretend otherwise).
How firm is it?
Medium — supportive enough to hold alignment, soft enough to sink into. The kapok blend keeps its shape without going rigid. If it's not right for you, the 100-night trial has you covered.
How do I wash it?
The cover unzips and is machine-washable, cold, gentle. The inner keeps its loft for years. It genuinely gets softer with every wash, especially the French Linen.
When does Batch 001 ship, and what do I pay now?
Nothing today. Reserving holds your numbered place from the 200-piece first batch. We email once — when your guling is ready to ship this Fall — and only then do you pay the $148. Cancel anytime before that, no questions.
